petty Philosophy in honor of yore, Jack thought. He had listened with the same attention devoted to news in the morning after but the shower before coffee: wasted effort.
But then the last words were stranded in the head, just as he had said when he was already with one foot in the door, the old crooked smile on his face.
One day you'll find the things you kept that you no longer need, Jack. Needless ballast you can well do without. You will understand that you are not synonymous and have you thought, but two distinct verbs for meaning and implications.
